A lot of people call a plumber thinking they have a clog. What they actually have is the same clog they've been fighting for the last year. Maybe the kitchen sink slows down every few months. Maybe the shower starts collecting water around your feet again.

Most people do not start thinking about replacing their water heater until something goes wrong. Usually it starts small. Maybe the hot water does not last as long as it used to. Maybe the heater starts making strange noises in the garage. Maybe you notice a small puddle underneath the tank and suddenly your attention shifts very quickly.

A lot of homeowners first notice it late at night. The house is quiet. The dishwasher is off. Nobody is using the shower. Then suddenly you hear it. Pop. Maybe a low rumble after that.

Few things ruin a normal morning faster than losing hot water halfway through a shower. One minute everything feels fine. The next minute you are standing there wondering what happened and trying to decide if you can survive thirty more seconds of freezing water. Then the questions start.
